The Role of the Authorising Engineer

The Authorising Engineer (AE) acts as an independent professional adviser to an organisation. The AE should be appointed by the organisation to provide services in accordance with the organisation's relevant company Safe Systems of Work, as well as HSE, Health Technical Memoranda (HTM) or Joint Service Publication (JSP) guidance. The AE's role is to act as technical assessor and make recommendations for the appointments of Authorised Persons (APs). Once AP's are appointed, the AE will continue to monitor the performance of the service and provide annual audits. With regard to audit in particular, the AE should remain independent of the operational structure of the organisation.
